Kylem woke, freezing, on the edge of the bed. Pan curled in the center, the bedclothes wrapped about her like a bird in a nest, leaving Kylem with nothing. He could tell from the darkness behind the curtains that it was not yet light, but he knew the pounding in his head and the foul taste in his mouth wouldn’t let him return to sleep.

He twisted, dropping his feet to the rug, grateful for the thick nap shielding his naked skin from the cold planks of the floor. Gathering up his clothing as he went, he made his way to the bathing room. He emptied a pitcher of water into a basin and dunked his head beneath the ice-flecked surface, remaining that way until he had to come up to breathe.

By the time he completed his morning ablutions and dressed, Kylem felt somewhat better. The pounding in his head receded enough to give way to the ravenous emptiness in his gut. He retraced his steps to the bedroom and pulled on his boots. He contemplated stirring up the fire in the hearth, but decided against it, worried he’d wake Pan. He wanted to go down and make arrangements for a carriage to be ready for them as soon as the tailor left later, and perhaps find a quiet place to eat, before he roused her.

On his way back to his room, daydreaming of a day spent taking Pan to buy pretty things and look at potential residences grand enough to make her happy to remain behind in Fordton, he remembered to stop and request the carriage.

The third floor remained quiet. Kylem wanted to tell Pan about the day he had planned for them, so he hoped his king would sleep late, though it wasn’t Norstum’s habit to do so. He went to Norstum’s door to listen for his lord. No one stirred inside. Kylem retreated down the hall, heading for his rooms.

“…doesn’t even know what you are, does he?” Norstum’s voice said from inside, harsh with anger.

Panic shot through Kylem. The king was in his rooms? Was Pan with him? She wasn’t meant to meet Nosrtum yet.

“He knows that I love him,” Pan said. “Nothing else is important.”

“It’s important, you spying little chit. The truth will crush him. You know that.”

Kylem’s heart thudded against the confines of his chest. What truth? Why wasn’t
